Odd very odd

Yesterday morning was my day before the birthday start of birthday weekend celebration. My little group in my office is like a mini family support system to get through our days. I had told them I would bring in something to add to the celebration of Friday and in preparation of my birthday. There was only one catch. Thursday night I completely forgot about making any sort of dessert.

I intended to try and wake up earlier Friday morning to make a quick batch of cookies. My DH laughed at me joking there was no way I’d be up and alert to make cookies in the morning as I’m usually not. Well to both of our surprise I was up and out of bed even before my alarm went off. Up and to the kitchen I went making some chocolate peanutbutter chip cookies. The cookies turned out delicious and the plate quickly disappeared at work.

While all of this was well and good, I found it quite sad in reflection. I can wake up early, be alert and happy in order to make cookies; yet I can’t wake up worth anything if the word exercise or workout is in part of the equation! We have a variety of ways to exercise around the house now, easily making the simple tools of a home gym yet I can never get up to take advantage of it. DH has joked that maybe if he dangled a cookie in my face I may just run after him. Sadly I think he may be right…:) Ok…goal for next week. Wake up earlier if only to do 20 minutes of  yoga or 20 minutes on the bike trainer…I CAN do this….I WILL do this.

Why is gaining weight so much easier than losing it….still one size gone from last year, better get a hurry on this year and maybe I can get 2!

Trying to get fabulous in 2012!

Mr Iron Calves PASSED ME!

Oh this week was an interesting week. Triumphs, falls and serious FRUSTRATION! Not quite sure where to even start as this week seems to have contained so much progress.

So lets start with the menu…

  • Monday – Salad and a few tater tots
  • Tuesday – Spaghetti and garlic bread – over ate 😦
  • Wednesday – Crunchy Onion Chicken, Brown Rice and broccoli rab
  • Thursday – Turkey enchilada casserole and salad – perfect portion
  • Friday – Pizza snowballs – new favorite quick way to eat a pizza
  • Saturday – Hobo potatoes and chicken
  • Sunday – Homemade grilled burgers

I have been using my fitness pal and most days I am staying within my alloted calorie budget. I try not to use the extra calories allowed win I’m working out as I’m really trying to start seeing the scale go down. I’m definitely starting to see muscles form but the scale isn’t going down. I hate this part of me working out. I always seem to gain a lot of muscle first and then later the scale goes down. Why do I have to bulk up so fast???? And I still have lots of chub so I can’t even SEE the definition..grrr!!!

Anyways. Running this week has been incredible. I’m still just doing half an hour jog/runs. Both times this week I was over 2 miles in that time period with was a huge improvement. One route was 2.18 miles and this mornings was 2.10 miles. This morning I was able to jog almost 16 minutes straight which was quite exciting as I was feeling fabulous even after the insane ride last night.

Swimming, went on Monday and did a lot of drills trying to improve my stroke. Going again today and I might work more on my legs. Not quite sure. I’m trying to figure out a way to keep track of my laps. As of right now I always seem to forget how far I swim. Need to come up with something soon!

Bike….well last night will be a ride that will be long remembered. It made me sooooooooo mad! Start off strong and the first little hill coming away from our house didn’t make me quite as winded as last time. GOOD. Went down a long straight stretch going out of town. I had passed a runner going down the big hill at the beginning and took a few moment break to get gloves off that just weren’t going to work. A few moments of riding later I hear “On the right”….MR IRON CALVES and bulging muscles PASSED ME! That is right…I’m on a bike…he is running…he passed ME! Let me say this again… A RUNNER PASSED ME ON THE BIKE! HORRIBLE!!!! I was PISSED! I was ready to cry and give up and ride harder all at the same time. The why bother I already suck mode entered my head. (It quickly went away!)

I figured I might as well keep pushing and try to finish the ride. Same 10 mile route as last week. We kept pushing able to do a few things I wasn’t able to last time so little improvements. Still very frustrated as we are coming towards the end of the ride. Trying to work my way up one of the hills in town and really struggling with it this time. I was trying to stay towards side of the road but then when I go off it is gravel. While having issues my wheel caught and caused me to take a nasty fall and bruise/skin up my left leg. Hubby while choosing to follow way to close behind me also got tripped up and fell over as he was clipped in. He got cut up and nice road rash on his arm. HORIBBLE!

Quick thing about me, I get really mad when I’m hurt and then cry later after everything is taken care of. So instead of being concerned that I am now bleeding. All I could do was yell at my hubby for being to close behind me because I didn’t want him hurt and I didn’t want to damage his much nicer bike than my 10 dollar garage sale bike. So I huffed and puffed and took off towards home. Not a fine moment. Only to discover that the same route that took me 90 minutes to do last time took me 70 minutes to do this time. That includes the runner passing me and the fall. So I know I’m improving, but GRRRRR! I’ve skinned my knees, been bruised and sore more in the last month than I have in the last 10 years and yet there is this crazy part of me that can’t wait to go out riding again tomorrow! I haven’t even done my first tri yet and I already feel addicted to try more and push harder so that my first one goes as amazing as possible!

Anyways this became an incredible long post. I’ll have more news next week and include some of the fun and food from the first 4th of July BBQ we are hosting! Have a safe and happy 4th friends!

Running VS Chocolate

Yesterday was just one of those days. Ladies you most likely will know what I mean. It was the type of workday that all I wanted was to bake a big chocolate brownie/cookie/cake concoction and eat that watching chickflicks with a heating pack on my cramping abdomen. Maybe you’ve had days where you can relate.

By the end of work I had convinced myself to go to the store to seek delicious ingredients. I managed to turn the other direction saying no no I need to lose weight not bake something. I get home to find my newest blog for review book sitting on the porch. I excitedly read the first chapter while I let the puppies out after a long day. The first chapter talks about 3 D’s…Discipline, Decision, and Daily. I realized that that is exactly what it is going to take for me to train for the triathlon and lose weight. There is no other way around it. I will have to have discipline to go for a run when the weather isn’t perfect (or cramping for that matter). It will take good decision after good decision to have the pounds add up and be the weight loss I need in order to have a healthier active life. And not only that but I can’t make that decision once a week I have to make it DAILY!

This was just the motivation I needed. I set aside the thoughts (at least this time) that chocolate would cure everything and put on my running pants and went to face the wind. I did my normal 5 minute warm up then a 30 minute walk run session. I pushed myself and felt great all at the same time. When I got home I mapped my new route and found that in the same amount of time I always go for a run I added another .3 miles to my route. I was so excited. I still have a long way to go but it is progress!

While everyday might a struggle, yesterday I made the right decision and that helps give me the confidence that I can make it again!!!

Fitness Friday

Even though the scale only went down by 1 I think this week was a fabulous success!!! There were many firsts and an excitement about the journey that I have started. I’ve been trying to closely follow the days and workouts in the 13 week sprint program.

This last week included a swim on Saturday for 45 minutes. Then again on Monday for about 35 minutes. Mondays swim was exciting because I tried the 400 meters and found that I could swim it straight through after months of not being in the pool and the time was between 10 and 11 minutes. Not great by any means but not half bad either.

I walked to work and back on Tuesday for 1.4 miles. Then last night I did a double workout, 30 minute walk/run and a 90 minute bike ride. This morning about everything from waist down hurts, breakfast will be served with tylenol and I’m planning on swimming tonight to try and work it out. I guess it is time to refill my swim punch card.

The bike ride was a lot of firsts. We went 10 miles (that bumped up longest distance by 4 miles!). I got a bug in the mouth with promptly made me start spitting everywhere. Went down a hill and got to a speed over 25 mph! WOW! All that and had an incredible time relaxing (and some tensing mind you) with my wonderful hubby! He is such an encouragement and I love that I’m not dragging him in circles anymore.

Dinners this week…

  • Monday – Salad
  • Tuesday – Tacos
  • Wednesday – Rice and Chicken, baked coated in French’s Onions
  • Thursday – Salad and Rice
  • Friday – Unsure as crazy amount of stuff to do and I don’t know what I will have time to cook ???

So there is my week in a nutshell. I know if I keep this up that the scale will start budging too! For now I’m just having fun with my workout and loving seeing my progress as my ability level goes up!!!!!

Have a great and healthy weekend!!!

Fitness Friday

Success, not in seeing scale go down this week, but in finding a plan/path to help me achieve the goals. I’ve mentioned previously that I’m interested in getting into the sport of triathlon. Hubby is very supportive and is encouraging me as much as possible as I start training for a little sprint. There is one this fall in Lake Stevens that I’m looking at for being my first competition. I know I won’t come close to placing but the thought of accomplishing that is incredible.

I went to and printed out their beginner 13 week training plan. I have 2 workouts this weekend and week 1 will be completed. It is nice because it gives me goal times and what to do each day, even if what to do is simply have a rest day for your body. My goal is stick as closely to that as possible.

The previous Sunday I got a 2.5 mile run in before church. Wednesday I went for almost a 4 mile bike ride by myself. (Going by myself was a huge step for this rider!) And then thursday night I did one of the C25K podcasts and went 1.8 miles. Still unbelievably slow but it has been improving.

The menu for this last week….well not as healthy as it should have been. Portion sizes have been better and several nights I haven’t had dessert. Yay me!

  • Monday – Nachos (seriously smaller portion than usual!)
  • Tuesday – Applebees (Had a salad)
  • Wednesday – Mac & Cheese
  • Thursday – Homemade pizza
  • Friday – Brown rice, parmesan/pecan encrusted chicken and fresh green beans
  • Saturday – left overs
  • Sunday – Greek chicken

After really looking at this weeks menu I already know that next week is going to be started off with salads. Oiy. So that is where I am at this week. Hopefully next week the scale will go down with a more regular plan of working out. (And a better planned menu!)

In case you are still reading all the way down here I thought you might enjoy this video. I found it on a triathlete blog and was amused. To anyone outside the world they probably think triathletes are insane. 🙂

Eliminating Excuses

It is so easy for me to find reasons not to work out. I always seem to forget how great I feel when I’m in the middle of or just finishing the workout. One of my many excuses is it not being easy to gather my stuff together to workout. Really REALLY lame excuse but there it is.

Simple solution…Dollar Store buckets.

It keeps the top of my dresser clean and orderly, but I always have stuff ready to go. One basket for swimming gear. One basket for running/cycling gear. I just empty the basket and I’m set to go workout.

Super Simple, Super Cheap, and Excuse Eliminated…How do you break the habit of lame excuses?

Fitness Friday

This last week was much improved. It has brought a couple of new ideas and a few goals going forward. This last weekend was celebrating my friend’s birthday at the Keg. Dinner was scrumptious, but lesson learned. Pick the poison if you will. I can’t eat the bread at beginning of meal, the martini and help in splitting the dessert. This whole week was working to get off the extra pounds from the weekend 😦 On the good side I’m at same weight I was prior to starting last weekend! Now to just learn not to have so much fun on the weekend.

Menu for the week

  • Monday – Turkey Tacos
  • Tuesday – Chicken Wraps with Broccoli Raab
  • Wednesday – Tuna Casserole
  • Thursday – Greek Chicken
  • Friday – Grilled Chicken & Hobo potatoes and carrots

Mostly healthy and a few night there were no desserts. YAY!

Fitness for the week

  • Last Friday night – First 5.8 mile ride, longest distance yet 🙂 but it took me a whole hour 😦
  • Saturday – TRX and worked on toning up the body
  • Wednesday – 20 minutes out walk/running. Did a .50 mile jogging straight. An improvement, I think I’m ditching the podcast.

Bonus one of the week is that I found another lady who sounds about the same bike level as me and we are going to try riding around the neighborhoods together. So excited! Our first ride is Sunday I’m looking forward to it, it will be nice not feeling bad for holding up Eric. I know it doesn’t bother him, but I do still end up feeling bad and ask him 20 times if he had a fun time…LOL.

Bonus two of the week, I found a sprint triathlon in September. It is .25 mile swim, 9.something bike ride, and a 3.2 mile run. I’ve been wanting to do one for a year, but haven’t found the rhythm to keep working out and make it happen. I talked to Hubby about this event and asked him to push/help me with it. Hence him kicking me out of house to do a run on Wednesday! Go Hubby! After I was done I felt great and was happy I got outside. Need to get a training plan and stick to it!

So this was the week and the upcoming plans for fitness. If you have any hints or tricks for training for a triathlon it would be appreciated!
