To Pin or Not to Pin

Yes oh yes I’m talking about the wonderful and yet so evil Pinterest. I’ve seen it sweeping the blog world, sweeping facebook as it now posts to there as well. Talk at lunch tables at work and in the halls and it is EVERYWHERE. I’ve been asked a few times if I have joined this world. And well the truth is no, I haven’t. I feel compelled to tell the reason why.

I’m going to start by saying that originally I thought it was Pine terest not Pin terest. I possibly think that my original definition of pining was correct, it is creating a deep longing for. About a year ago I was obsessed with blogging and reading other blogs. Reading blog from homemakers, moms, working wifes, design blogs, cooking blogs and about everything in between. I found recipes, crafts, projects, ideas and so much more! I constantly was planning the next remodel, the next project I could save up for. I was following over 100 blogs and seemed to find new links every day. And then one day it hit me like a 2×4, think Tommy Boy.

I had become completely discontent with my life. I had no reason to be discontent I had everything I needed and blessed with so much more. Yet because of the new found pining of projects and abilities, crafts and the time to do them I had become miserable. I wanted to have the funds to go buy old furniture refinish everything and make a totally awesome room. Sad thing is, that as beautiful as I think that makes the room it honestly isn’t me but I WANTED IT! I wanted to do projects that weren’t even me, but felt compelled to do them?!?!?!?! Why, because they were awesome and homemakery???

So as Pinterest comes out and the wave starts and is taking over people everywhere at least for now I will bow out. I will still choose to do projects, but I will do this on my time in my terms and only for something I actually have interest in. If I want a recipe I will search for options on that one concept, not become obsessed with the next 100 recipes I feel the need that I have to try to be the best housewife. I don’t want to feel like a failing housewife seeing 1000’s of ideas that are awesome and great, but not for me and then feel guilty about it. I know that a majority of it is my own issues, but seriously why do it to yourself?

Anyways there is my rant for the day. What do you think about Pinterest?

Can’t find one? DIY time!

When we were still back in the apartment, I decided that I wanted to have a fruit basket. Due to limited counter space I decided that I wanted a 2 level hanging fruit basket. I started browsing online for different hanging fruit baskets and became rather disappointed at the limited selection. Most of them were very cheap and flimsy. Or a little more than I would want to spend for a fruit basket.

We decided that we would try making our own. Looking back this was one of our first DIY projects we ever did together. The search for cute baskets was on. We checked a few hardware stores and Wal-Mart and had no luck. We found our way to one of my favorite shopping stores (Ross!) and hit the gold mine!

The Perfect Basket

I found 2 cute baskets, because they were stacked together I ended up getting them for one low price of 5 and change. We headed back to the local hardware store and looked at their different chains. We found one that matched the exact tones of the baskets. The gentleman at the store patiently cut 6 strands that allowed us to put the baskets together, with minimal effort.

So perfect!

After going through several weeks for shopping and trying to get these put together we discovered that there wasn’t a location in our apartment kitchen that would actually hold the basket. It was so disappointing!

When we moved into our house, I was delighted to find a hook already installed near our sink that fit the hanging basket perfectly. It is a well used item in our house and I’m so happy we have something that will last!

Potatoes, Bananas, Kiwi or Grapefruits...It holds it all!

Cleaning It Out On Friday

Have you ever opened up the doors under your kitchen sink and then closed them because you didn’t want see all the bottles or smell the smells that come from within that dark space??? Have you ever gone through some of them and realized you have a cleaning product over 5, 10 or more years old? How often can you even find that one cleaner that you wanted to use in the first place??

Inspired by my friends blog nikkilovesbrad I decided to follow suit and try to clean out under my sink. (Sometimes following other blogs is dangerous to your household as it makes you want to clean and do EVERYTHING!) Here is how under our sink started out….

Before...I didn't want to show you the cabinet doors as they still had stains from before we moved in!

I went to the dollar store and purchased some little baskets to help organized and sort out all the chemicals. I tried to throw out anything old or anything I knew we weren’t going to use.

Can't beat a dollar per basket!

I put together a basket for the things used regularly like dishsoap, dishwasher soap etc. A basket for spray cleaners, one for large items like extra city garbage bags, and even bought a little can for brushes.

Once organized it fit back together like this.

Now even the paper towels fit down there!

Now I can show you the doors, spent a while scrubbing them with a cleaner that had been shoved to the back of the cabinet.

Some areas of the house really haven’t needed to be “organized” with little baskets and extra attention, but this under sink area definitely needed it!

What have you cleaned out or organized lately? Have you checked all your cleaners recently and made sure that they were things you will use and haven’t just been sitting around 5 years? What is your favorite cleaner that you will always have on hand??

Have a great weekend!!!

Random Thoughts for Thursday

Ahh it is Thursday again and I have to admit I love these little random posts. It covers anything and everything and all the tidbits that go into every day life. This week has had some bit things happen.

  • First super excited to be picked for the project parade over at The Creative Crate blog. I linked up my homemade ice cream cake and it made the parade! YAY!!! You can see it right here!
  • I mentioned that we got new phones. I’m still learning how to use my little Comet but I love having a smart phone and found it so helpful I don’t know what took me so long to get one! Plus it can keep up for my Hubby’s fancy MyTouch4. 🙂 His screen is just bigger, oh well.
  • Discovered that any project is going to take twice as long as I thought in this house and am hoping that this weekend we can make progress organizing/decorating the office and finish the hallway. We’ll see how far we get.
  • Excited that this is day 4 of starting a workout plan with my friend. Different goals, but one purpose of growing a friendship and getting physically fit. Yeah baby!
  • And how about this for a random fact….Please tell me that someone else out there does this besides me, and no I don’t do this in public only at home. You get a delicious bowl of cookie dough ice cream or anything with delicious bites of chocolatey goodness and you want to save the “goodness” for last. Take a bite, suck off all the ice cream and proceed to spit the “goodness” back in the bowl to save for the end. Hubby laughs at me each and every time but it is so good to have a spoonful of all the yummy bites right at the end! Do you do that or anything similar????

So those are my random thoughts for Thursday….How is your week going??
